The Office of the State Attorney for the Ninth Judicial Circuit has announced that it has formally filed a charge against Sharelle Johnson for her role in the shooting that injured two children during a Pop Warner football practice in October 2023. Johnson is facing a charge of Culpable Negligence which is a third-degree felony. The charge is punishable by up to five years in the Florida Department of Corrections.
According to a press release from the Office of the State Attorney, Ms. Johnson’s 11-year-old son was able to acquire a loaded gun from an unsecured cardboard box left in her vehicle on October 2, 2023. Two children were shot and injured as a result. Authorities say the cardboard box was worn and tattered. It reportedly did not have any safety locks or fasteners and was easily accessible.
On December 7, Sharelle Johnson was taken into custody by Orange County deputies and placed under arrest.
