Anaheim Police Provide Update On Officer Involved Shooting At S. Anaheim Boulevard On October 29th

On December 8, 2023, Captain Eric Trapp of the Anaheim Police Department conducted a briefing on the officer-involved shooting that took place in the 1200 block of South Anaheim Boulevard on October 29, 2023.

Anaheim police responded to the area of Anaheim Boulevard and Winston Road before 9:00 a.m. on October 29, 2023, to investigate a report of an adult male armed with an assault rifle. The subject was identified as 20-year-old Abigail Crystal Lopez of Anaheim, California.

The 911 caller reported that a man was waving the assault rifle around while running in and out of buildings. People in the area were running. The suspect was walking with a stick behind Naturista at 1341 S. Anaheim Boulevard. A female police officer verified the suspect was armed with a rifle. A male officer alerted dispatch of shots fired. Medics were called to the scene.

Officers saw Lopez armed with an assault rifle and a metal pipe in front of the Burger King. Officers ordered Lopez to put down the rifle. Lopez complied but picked the weapon back up. Officers ordered Lopez to put down the gun. Lopez repeatedly laid the weapon down and picked it up. She pointed the rifle in the direction of the officers. The officers responded by shooting her. Once the scene was cleared, officers rendered live-saving treatment until medics assumed care.

About two hours prior to the officer-involved shooting, a 911 caller reported that Lopez vandalized a parked vehicle. CCTV footage from a nearby establishment confirms the 911 call. A short time later, Lopez was seen carrying a small firearm.

Lopez was later pronounced deceased at an area hospital. An assessment of the firearm revealed it was a replica not a real weapon.
