A woman has been sentenced to 23 years for permanently damaging a victim’s vocal cord by stabbing her in the neck with a broken glass bottle. According to a news release from the Leicestershire Police, 45-year-old Shelley Hill was found guilty of attempted murder in October at the end of a trial held at Leicester Crown Court.

The stabbing incident happened during the early evening of April 28 in Yeoman Street. Now, Hill has been sentenced to 23 years imprisonment. Once released, she will be subjected to licence for a further three years. Authorities say the victim, who is in her 40s, was in the hospital for treatment for four weeks following the attack and still suffers frequent nightmares nearly six months on.

Just after 6 PM, police were dispatched to a car park in Yeoman Street by East Midlands Ambulance Service which were attending the report of a stabbing. Authorities say Hill and the victim had known each other for a few months through another individual. The women were with a group when Hill reportedly became aggressive towards the victim.

Hill grabbed the victim’s bottle, smashed it, and used it to stab her in the neck, according to authorities. Following the stabbing, Hill left the scene. The incident was captured on CCTV leading to Hill’s arrest two days later on April 30. She was charged the following day.

Although Hill pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent, she denied attempted murder.
