The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office has announced that it is investigating an officer-involved shooting on Thursday, December 7, 2023. Officers from the Riverside County Regional Gang Task Force were in the area of Florida Avenue and Fairview Avenue in Hemet around 7:29 PM on December 7.

When officers attempted to contact an adult male subject, the subject fled leading to a foot pursuit. According to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office, the suspect produced a handgun during the foot pursuit and an officer-involved shooting occurred.

The subject was struck by gunfire. Officers provided medical aid until paramedics reached the scene. Authorities say the subject was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. No officers were injured. The involved Hemet Police Officer assigned to the task force is being placed on paid administrative leave in accordance with Hemet Police Department Policy.

At this time, the officer’s name is not being released. A Riverside County District Attorney’s Office investigator assigned to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office Force Investigation Detail will head the investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
