Salem, Oregon – The Salem Police Department is investigating the abduction of a woman and her young child. According to an SPD statement, they were abducted from their apartment in southeast Salem by the woman’s estranged boyfriend around 3:30 p.m. on February 1, 2025.
SPD says officers learned that the suspect, Javier B. Munoz Jr., entered the apartment around 3 a.m. and kept the victim and child inside. 12 hours later, Munoz allegedly made threats and forced the woman and her child to leave with him.
A caller reported that a man and woman were struggling over a child in the 400 block of Hawthorne Avenue Northeast. SPD says officers arrived at the scene and learned that the incident involved Munoz and the victim.
Authorities say Munoz fled with the child on footage toward Geer Community Park while armed with a handgun. Authorities found Munoz and the child concealed beneath a trailer in the area of Oregon Avenue and Bell Road Northeast.
The child was unharmed. 45-year-old Javier Munoz is charged with First-Degree Kidnapping, Menacing, Unlawful Use of a Weapon, and Burglary. He was booked into the Polk County Jail and also had multiple outstanding warrants from other cases in that country.
