New Bern, North Carolina – The New Bern Police Department says it has arrested a suspect in connection to a child abuse case.

According to NBPD, officers responded to 3501 Wind Hill Ct Apartment #43 for a medical emergency involving an 18-day-old infant. At the scene, first responders found the infant in distress and struggling to breathe.

Authorities say the child was transported to CarolinaEast Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. Doctors stabilized the infant before it was transported to ECU Health.

NBPD said in a statement that additional tests revealed that the infant had been subjected to trauma and was likely the victim of child abuse.

Detectives say they found sufficient evidence to arrest the infant’s father, 19-year-old Jorden Gardner who is charged with Felony Child Abuse.
