Malacai Gant arrested in November slaying of Justin Sartin in Portland

The Portland Police Bureau has announced the arrest of a suspect in a shooting in the Powellhurst-Gilbert neighborhood in mid-November 2023. A press release from the Portland Police Bureau explains that East Precinct officers responded to a shooting at a business near SE 122nd Avenue and SE Clinton Street around 1:45 AM on November 15, 2023.

Upon arrival, officers found an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was transported to a local hospital where he passed away. The victim was later identified as 25-year-old Justin D. Sartin, who was also known as Justin Sartin-Scott.

The medical examiner determined that the victim had died by homicide by gunshot wound. During the investigation, Portland Police Bureau detectives say they identified the suspect in the homicide as 18-year-old Malacai Gant. Detectives worked with the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office to obtain an arrest warrant for Gant.

On Wednesday, December 6, 2023, Gant was taken into custody. He was subsequently transferred to the Multnomah County Detention Center where he was booked on charges of Murder in the Second Degree, Unlawful Use of a Weapon, and Unlawful Use of a Motor Vehicle related to the homicide.
