Santa Rosa, California – The Santa Rosa Police Department has announced the arrest of a restaurant manager for secretly recording a patron in the restaurant. According to SRPD, officers responded to the Ohana Hawaiian BBQ located at 2150 Santa Rose Avenue to investigate a report of a cell phone located in an air vent on the ceiling of the women’s restroom.
SRPD says the female patron has a habit of checking vents in public restrooms after seeing several videos on social media about hidden recording devices. The woman checked the video and allegedly found a cell phone with the camera lens facing the interior of the bathroom.
The patron called SRPD and notified the manager before guarding the restroom to prevent anyone from entering. SRPD says responding officers removed the vent cover and recovered the phone.
According to an SRPD statement, the phone was recording video and had been recording for approximately 46 minutes. Officers say the phone belonged to the restaurant manager, 37-year-old Daniel Nam of Santa Rosa.
SRPD Domestic Violence Sexual Assault Team detectives assumed control of the investigation. Detectives claim Nam had used a concealed recording device to invade the privacy of at least one victim.
Detectives seized Nam’s cell phone and laptop and will be reviewing the contents to determine how long Nam had allegedly been recording people and also to identify the victims.
Police say additional charges may be filed. Nam was booked into the Sonoma County Jail with a bail enhancement of $200,000.
