Omaha Police have provided an update on the officer-involved shooting earlier this week. According to OPD, the injured man has been identified as 25-year-old Nickalous Vallejos.

Police say Vallejos and his wife had a domestic disturbance before officers responded to the residence. OPD says Vallejos’s wife called 911 to say her husband had a gun and was making suicidal statements.

At the scene, police found that Vallejos was already outside on the front porch holding a gun to his head. OPD says officers attempted to negotiate with Vallejos and asked him to drop the gun multiple times.

Authorities say a cruiser’s camera captured Vallejos moving the gun back and forth to different parts of his body and not listening to commands from officers. OPD says Vallejos put the gun down to his side at one point before raising it with his left hand.

OPD says Officer Tyler Boyer fired one round from his service weapon. Vallejos was struck causing him to drop the gun. According to OPD, Officer Boyer said in a voluntary interview that Vallejos pointed his gun in the direction of a fellow officer so he fired his weapon to protect the officer in question.

Police say Officer Boyer has five years of service with OPD and was currently working with the Uniform Patrol Bureau. Boyer continues to be paid critical incident review leave.

OPD says a large quantity of narcotics was found in Vallejos’s home. Authorities booked Vallejos into Douglas County Corrections for Possession with Intent to Deliver Cocaine.
