The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has announced an arrest in connection to a house fire in the Brooklyn neighborhood near Riverside Avenue.
JSO reports that its officers quickly apprehended William Baker near the burning home after multiple witnesses provided matching descriptions. An officer reportedly saw Baker walking away from the fire covered in soot and ash.
Jacksonville Fire and Rescue contained the fire and extinguished the flames, according to authorities. JSO says it determined there was probable cause to arrest Baker for arson following interviews and reviewing of surveillance video.
Authorities say the home was reportedly vacant. JSO believes Baker was trying to squat there when he set the fire. Police said officers later learned he had purchased gasoline from a nearby gas station before starting the blaze.
Authorities say Baker is a known transient in the area and has been arrested three times in the past four weeks. He also had two dogs with him and they appear to have suffered injuries from the fire.
Baker was booked into the Duval County Jail on a charge of Arson.
