The Yakima Police Department says it has arrested a suspect for allegedly shooting at officers. YPD reports that its officers investigated a domestic-violence related call involving the theft of a motor vehicle near the Yakima County Jail around 11 a.m. on November 14, 2024.
YPD says officers found the vehicle and it continued driving in a reckless manner to try to elude officers. Police say the pursuit was terminated due to concerns for public safety.
A Yakima Police Sergeant reportedly spotted the vehicle a short time later. The vehicle drove southbound on North 16th Avenue and the driver allegedly began shooting at police.
Police say the suspect fired multiple rounds at a fully marked police car in the area of 16th Avenue and River Road.
Officers pursued the vehicle and the suspect allegedly shot and struck three occupied police vehicles. Police say the vehicle collided with an uninvolved vehicle at the intersection of South 4th Avenue and Yakima Avenue.
YPD says the suspect surrendered at this time. The occupants of the uninvolved vehicle were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect was also taken to the hospital for medical evaluation.
The 24-year-old male driver is charged with six counts of 1st Degree Assault, Attempt to Elude, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Vehicular Assault, DUI, and Taking a Motor Vehicle Without Permission.
