Update – The Arlington County Police Department says based on the preliminary investigation it believes the resident of the home, 56-year-old James Yoo, is the involved suspect. The suspect was inside the home at the time of the explosion. Human remains were located at the scene and are believed to belong to the suspect.
The Arlington County Police Department in Virginia has issued a preliminary statement on the home explosion on North Burlington Street. According to a news release, officers with the Arlington County Police Department responded to the 800 block of North Burlington Street in reference to shots heard around 4:45 PM on December 4, 2023.
Authorities say the preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect discharged a flare gun approximately 30 to 40 times from inside his residence into the surrounding neighborhood. The discharge of the flare gun led to no property damage or reported injuries.
During the investigation, officers acquired a search warrant for the suspect’s residence. Officers tried to contact the suspect over the telephone and using loudspeakers, but the suspect did not respond and remained barricaded inside the home.
Authorities say the suspect discharged several rounds from what is believed to be a firearm inside the home when officers were attempting to execute a search warrant. According to the Arlington County Police Department, the investigation into the circumstances of the explosion is ongoing.
The Arlington County Fire Department responded to the scene to extinguish the fire. Authorities confirm the fire is under control and crews still battle small spot fires at approximately 10:30 PM.
Three officers suffered minor injuries, but none were transported to the hospital in relation to this incident.
