San Mateo Police Department responded to Hillsdale Shopping Center on November 29, 2023, at 8:51 p.m. to investigate a report of a physical altercation. Upon arrival, officers made contact with Macy’s Loss Prevention.
It was determined that a 20-year-old male spent more than three hours in Macy’s, browsing merchandise. The suspect entered a fitting room with various articles of clothing and shoes. After an undetermined amount of time, the suspect emerged from the fitting room and exited the store via the Emergency Exit without paying.
When the suspect attempted to elude Macy’s Loss Prevention, a physical altercation ensued. SMPD officers arrived as the suspect attempted to punch a Macy’s Loss Prevention Agent.
The suspect was determined to be wearing several articles of clothing with the price tags attached. The stolen merchandise tallied up to $961.
The suspect has been identified as Tauangemai Latukefu, 20, of Redwood City, California. Authorities charged Latukefu with second-degree robbery because the retail theft entailed an assault on a Macy’s employee.
