Lynchburg Police arrest suspect in near shooting of Adult Protective Services worker

The Lynchburg Police Department announced an arrest in connection to the near shooting of an Adult Protective Services employee. Around 3:47 p.m. on Friday, LPD says its officers responded to reports of shots fired in the 1900 block of Union Street.

LPD says APS was carrying out a welfare check on an adult female at a residence. An adult male reportedly became agitated and threatened to shoot the APS worker. It is alleged that the worker was leaving when the male suspect fired a shot in their direction.

LPD says its officers made multiple attempts to contact the subject before entering the residence. After entering the home, officers located and apprehended the suspect. Authorities say no injuries were reported.

55-year-old Charles Rayburn Jr. has been charged with Attempted Murder, Reckless Handling of a Firearm, Discharge of a Firearm in the City Limits, Possession of a Firearm While Subject to a Protective Order, and Violation of a Protective Order.
