The Galveston Police Department has announced the arrest of 30-year-old Channel Yonko in connection to the death of her 17-month-old daughter, Hannah Yonko. GPD reports that its officers responded to the 3300 block of 59th Street after receiving reports of an abandoned child around 9:45 a.m. on October 23.

Police say officers found the child on the pavement. The victim was transported to UTMB Galveston where she succumbed to her injuries a short time later. GPD says it quickly identified the suspect and took her into custody.

Police have identified the suspect as the girl’s mother, 30-year-old Channel Yonko. She has been charged with Capital Murder.

Chief Doug Balli made a statement about the arrest. “This is a horrible crime. All children deserve to feel safe when around loved ones, especially with their own mother. The Galveston Police Department is committed to bringing justice for Hannah and ensuring the safety of all children in our community.”
