The Texarkana Police Department responded to a riot at the Riverview Behavioral Hospital on Sunday morning. Around 9:30 a.m., TPD says it received a call saying that there were unruly patients that started a riot at the facility.
The patients had reportedly taken control of a section of the hospital. The patients were using a piece of metal to break out interior windows in an attempt to escape the facility. At the scene, officers learned that several staff members were trapped inside a nurse’s station surrounded by the unruly juveniles.
Officers used riot gear and less-lethal options to successfully separate all parties involved and de-escalate the situation. TPD says there were no major injuries to the patients, staff, or officers.
Three male juveniles, aged 15, 15, and 17, were taken into custody for Inciting a Riot. They will be booked into a Juvenile Detention Facility. The rest of the juveniles will remain in the custody of the Riverview Behavioral Hospital.
