The Greeley Police Department has announced the arrest of a man in connection to a double fatal collision. Around 6:45 a.m. on October 4, 2024, the Weld County Regional Communication Center received 911 calls about a two-vehicle crash on Highway 34 in which a passenger truck rolled multiple times.
GPD officers and other first responders responded to the scene. Due to the number of people injured, additional ambulances and officers were requested. GPD says Highway 34 was shut down in both directions.
Four of the five people in the truck that rolled were ejected. All five injured adults were transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries. A short time later, two passengers were pronounced deceased.
Two other passengers suffered serious life-threatening injuries. The driver of the other vehicle was uninjured and remained at the scene. GPD says the driver is cooperating with the investigation.
GPD says it appears that excessive speed, dangerous driving, and unrestrained occupants were contributing factors. The 48-year-old driver of the truck was not ejected. He was transported to an area hospital with serious life-threatening injuries.
The truck’s driver, 48-year-old Hector Castaneda Lopez, was arrested in Loveland, Colorado after being released from the hospital. He is charged with two counts of Vehicular Homicide and two counts of Vehicular Assault.
