A gun supplier who was convicted of killing a 13-year-old boy has been sentenced to 108.5 years in prison for First-Degree Murder and other charges. Authorities say that 33-year-old Stephon Nelson was sentenced to prison for the killing of 13-year-old Malachi Lukes in March 2020.
Nelson and two co-defendants, Tyiion Freeman and Koran Jackson, were found guilty of First-Degree Murder while Armed, several counts of Assault with Intent to Kill while Armed, Conspiracy to Commit Various Firearms Offenses, and more.
Freeman has been sentenced to 108 years while Jackson was sentenced to 164 years. Between February 1, 2020 and May 31, 2020, the defendants and others allegedly participated in a conspiracy to illegally possess, carry, and transfer firearms that would be used in the commission of dangerous and violent crimes.
Authorities say Nelson is a felon who is approximately ten years older than his coconspirators. He supplied firearms that were illegally possessed, carried, and transferred. On March 1, 2020, the defendants were involved in two shootings in two separate neighborhoods in just ten minutes.
Around 2:08 p.m., they were traveling in a stolen Kia Soul when they followed 13-year-old Malachi Lukes and his three friends. In the Ninth Street area of the 600 block of South Street NW, two of the defendants got out of the vehicle and opened fire.
Lukes was shot in the back as he fled. The defendants traveled to another neighborhood where they opened fire on a rival crew. No injuries were reported in the second shooting.
