Houston County Sheriff’s Office looking for vehicle that fatally struck bicyclist

The Houston County Sheriff’s Office says its Traffic Division is searching for the driver of a vehicle that fatally struck a bicyclist. HCSO’s Traffic Division responded to a vehicle fatality on Pyles Road west of Flournoy Road on September 19.

HCSO says a 68-year-old white male from Bluffton, South Carolina, Phillip R. Clifford, was cycling east when he was fatally struck by an unknown vehicle. Video footage reportedly shows the victim traveling east around 8:07 a.m.

At roughly 8:08 a.m., the video shows a newer model white four-door pickup pulling a double-axle trailer traveling in the same direction. Although the exact make and model are not known, it is believed to be a Ford 4×4 F-250 or F-350 or a 4×4 Chevrolet GMC2500 or GMC3500.

The truck has a black step at the front of the bed behind the rear door. The victim, Phillip R. Clifford succumbed to his injuries. Anyone with information about the vehicle is asked to call HCSO’s Traffic Division at 478-542-2080.
