San Bernardino authorities detain Leon Sanchez in double shooting at Apple Valley auto repair center

The San Bernardino County Sheriff is investigating a double shooting at an Apple Valley auto repair center. Apple Valley station deputies responded to an automotive repair center at 13600 Quinnault Road for a reported shooting just after 4 p.m. on September 20, 2024.

At the scene, responding deputies contacted 46-year-old Leon Sanchez who was allegedly armed with a handgun. Deputies detained Sanchez without incident. Authorities also found 31-year-old Frank Portillo and 44-year-old Joshua Augsburger suffering from gunshot wounds.

Portillo succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Augsburger was transported to an area trauma center where he remains in critical condition. Authorities believe that Portillo and Augsburger traveled to the location where they confronted Sanchez.

During an argument, witnesses reportedly heard Portillo threaten Sanchez. The situation escalated leading to Sanchez allegedly firing at both men. Authorities confirm that Sanchez had a valid issue San Bernardino County Carry Concealed Firearm permit.
