One dead in officer-involved shooting on South Desert Air Boulevard in Yuma

The Yuma Police Department was involved in an officer-involved shooting on Friday evening. YPD reports that its officers responded to the 3000 block of South Ragen Drive for a physical domestic disturbance around 6:32 p.m. on September 20, 2024.

A 34-year-old male suspect reportedly left with a juvenile and barricaded inside a home in the 11000 block of South Desert Air Boulevard. The Yuma County Sheriff’s Office and YPD established a perimeter after locating the suspect.

The Special Enforcement Team responded to the scene. YPD says officers attempted to call the suspect out, but the suspect fired multiple rounds in the area of the officers. Negotiations were attempted.

The suspect fired more rounds. Authorities say this continued multiple times until officers discharged their firearms hitting the suspect. Following the shooting, medical aid was provided.

The suspect was transported to an area hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The Yuma Regional Critical Incident Response Team has assumed control of the investigation. No officers were injured during the incident.
