The Birmingham Police Department is currently on the scene of a homicide at the University Crossings Apartments in the 200 block of 3rd Avenue Southwest. Around 10:49 p.m., South Precinct officers responded to a call of a burglary of a residence.
As officers were en route to the scene, the call was upgraded to a person shot. At the scene, responding officers found a male victim outside the apartment suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
Birmingham Fire & Rescue reached the scene and transported the victim to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries. Officers learned that a second male victim inside the apartment suffering from a gunshot wound.
The second victim was pronounced deceased. Officers learned there was an adult female victim and an adult male victim who exited the same apartment. They were located a short distance away suffering from gunshot wounds.
Both victims were transported to an area hospital. Their conditions are not known at this time. BPD says the preliminary investigation indicates people were inside the apartment playing cards when the front door was kicked in by an unknown suspect.
The suspect began firing shots. BPD confirms no one is in custody at this time.
