Illinois State Police investigating after officer and suspect shot in Sheldon

The Illinois State Police is investigating the shooting of an officer and suspect on Sunday night. ISP reports that the Iroquois County Sheriff’s Department requested the ISP Division of Criminal Investigation Zone 5 to assist in an officer-involved shooting investigation around 8:45 p.m. on September 1, 2024.

ISP says the preliminary reports suggest that ICSD was involved in a pursuit of an armed suspect with a hostage. The pursuit traveled into Indiana when the Newton County Sheriff’s Department engaged.

The pursuit returned to Illinois before the suspect crashed in Sheldon. It is alleged that the suspect exited his vehicle and gunfire was exchanged. A Newton County Sheriff’s Department deputy was struck.

The suspect, 37-year-old Andrew Roselius, passed away at the scene. The deputy was transported to an area hospital where he remains in critical condition. ISP says no hostage was found inside the vehicle.
