The DeSoto Police Department and outside agencies are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred early Sunday. DPD reports that a male subject is dead following the shooting. Police initially responded to the 1100 block of Greenbriar Drive just after 4 a.m. for a report of an unidentified armed subject.
A Hispanic male was allegedly carrying a small child and accompanied by two women. The man began knocking on random residential doors and trespassing through their front and backyards.
At the scene, police reportedly encountered the man who was armed with a handgun and was still holding a small child. DPD says the man threatened to shoot any police officer he encountered.
Officers attempted to de-escalate the situation, but the group fled into a creek behind the homes and police temporarily lost visual contact. Roughly 30 minutes later, police found the group in the 1200 block of Springbrook Drive.
Police attempted to speak to the man and get him to drop the gun and let the child go. DPD says the man remained uncooperative. One officer armed with a rifle fired and fatally struck the suspect.
The two women were taken in for questioning, but were not successful in helping identify the suspect. DPD confirms the child was turned over to family members.
