A Salem man is dead after allegedly lying down on the tracks and being hit by an incoming train. The Salem Police Department reports that officers responded to the 1200 block of D Street Northeast for a report of a man struck by a passing freight train around 4:50 p.m. on Monday.

SPD says the railroad crew reported that the collision occurred on the track just south of D Street. Witnesses reportedly told authorities that the man was standing near the tracks and laid down across them before the train passed.

The man who was struck by the train has been identified as 32-year-old Alexander Boyd Schumpert. SPD says he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
