The Covington Police Department has arrested a suspect in connection to an early morning shooting on August 23. CPD reports that officers responded to a call reporting gunshots near Haynie Street and Murphy Street around 5:30 a.m. on August 23, 2024.
At the scene, officers found a male victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds lying in a field. The victim was conscious when officers arrived. The victim, 19-year-old Jamal Houston, allegedly admitted to firing back at the shooter during the incident.
Officers recovered a handgun near where the victim was found. Detectives began investigating and determined that the shooting began in the 500 block of Simonton Street and continued on foot across Murphy and into a field between Haynie Street and Hall Alley.
CPD says officers detained 30-year-old Trey Taylor for questioning. Detectives believe Taylor and Houston were in the area and exchanged fire with a third suspect who has been identified as 21-year-old Cabias Purham. CPD confirms the investigation is ongoing.
Authorities arrested Purham in the 400 block of North College Street. Houston remains in critical condition.
