Officer Truman Fitzgerald with the Birmingham Police Department reported in a video statement that BPD is on the scene of a homicide. An officer fired shots at an armed suspect during the homicide investigation.
Around 8:20 p.m., BPD Real Time Crime Specialists observed a stolen vehicle in the North Birmingham Homes Housing Community. BPD officers responded to the 3100 block of 43rd Avenue North where they spotted the stolen vehicle.
A patrol officer heard shots being fired from an apartment. The patrol officer spotted the armed suspect leaving the apartment. The officer fired shots at the suspect. Officer Fitzgerald said the armed suspect entered the passenger side of the stolen vehicle and the occupants fled the area.
BPD pursued the stolen vehicle until it was found abandoned in the 4100 block of Fairmont Place. North Precinct officers responded to the apartment and found an adult male unresponsive suffering from a gunshot wound.
The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene. No one is in custody at this time.
