Two dead after car hits building and causes a fire in Belleville Illinois

Two people are dead in Belleville, Illinois following a crash that led to a fire. The Belleville Police Department says it responded to the 100 block of South 8th Street for a vehicle that hit a building and led to a structure fire around 9:11 a.m. on August 11, 2024.

At the scene, officers found a fully involved structure fire. A juvenile male was rescued from the building. An adult female and a juvenile female were found deceased in the residence once the fire was extinguished.

BPD says the preliminary information suggests that a person of interest fled the scene on foot. The suspect was seen entering a wood line off of South 29th Street near Otto Street. Later, a citizen called police to say she believed the suspect was near the Dollar Tree at 5831 Belleville Crossing.

Police took the person of interest into custody. No other suspects are being sought at this time.
