Salt Lake City Police arrest suspect in fatal shooting of Andrew Mozart Maka

The Salt Lake City Police Department has arrested a 31-year-old man for murder. SLCPD reports that it arrested Jima Gat in connection to the fatal shooting of 41-year-old Andrew Mozart Maka.

Gat was booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on charges of Murder and Obstruction of Justice. Around 11:54 p.m. on August 5, 2024, SLC911 received a call about an unresponsive man on the ground inside an apartment at 1600 West Snow Queen Place.

Officers found 41-year-old Maka suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound. The victim passed away. SLCPD believes Maka, Gat, and others went to the apartment and started drinking.

At some point, Maka accidentally discharged a handgun which injured Gat’s brother. In return, Gat took out a gun and shot Maka multiple times. Gat, his brother, and others left the apartment.

Detectives believe Gat disposed of the firearm by throwing it into a body of water nearby.
