The San Mateo Police Department is investigating an assault and a shooting. Around 7:53 a.m. on August 2, 2024, SMPD received a 911 call about a disturbance. SMPD says the caller was frantic and said a suspect had crashed into his car and the suspect had been shot.
Officers responded to the scene with their emergency lights and sirens activated. The caller gave the incorrect location. After a few minutes, officers found the crime scene near the intersection of 19th Avenue and Grant Street.
Officers located the victim and a witness. During the investigation, officers discovered that the suspect drove a U-Haul truck to where the victim was parked and a verbal altercation started between the victim and suspect.
The suspect returned to the truck to obtain a metal pipe. The suspect allegedly returned and hit the victim with the pipe in the head and arms multiple times. The victim shot the suspect with a .22 caliber pistol.
The suspect returned to his truck, placed it in reverse, and drove at the victim who was nearly run over. Instead, the truck collided with the victim’s vehicle before the suspect fled the scene.
The victim was treated at an area hospital and released. The suspect was located at a Palo Alto hospital where he is in stable condition.
