A 72-year-old man has been arrested for shooting at an employee of a residential complex on Tuesday evening. The Roanoke Rapids Police Department reports that officers responded to the residential complex on Becker Drive in reference to an armed subject around 3 p.m. on May 21, 2024.
While officers were responding to the scene, callers informed authorities that a shot had been fired at an employee inside the complex. Officers arrived within minutes and entered the complex. RRPD says officers determined that a resident had fired a shot in the office area at a maintenance person.
The bullet barely missed the victim. It is believed that the shooting stemmed from a disagreement between the suspect and the employee. The argument escalated with the suspect allegedly saying he hated the employee and wanted him to die before a shot was fired.
The suspect had returned to his apartment. 72-year-old Linwood Miles was taken into custody following a brief struggle. RRPD says a loaded handgun was found in his front pocket and he appeared to be heavily intoxicated.
Miles is charged with Attempted First-Degree Murder, Discharging a Firearm into an Occupied Dwelling, Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill, and Carrying a Concealed Weapon.
