34-year-old Joel Gonzalez in custody for hitting and seriously injuring a sheriff’s deputy

The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office confirms a suspect is in custody after hitting and seriously injuring a deputy with a stolen vehicle. Around 8 a.m. on June 24, 2024, Auto Theft Task Force members advised Eden Township Substation deputies that they spotted two stolen vehicles driving through the Ashland Area of San Leandro.

ACRATT investigators observed the suspects driving the stolen vehicles at high speeds. A deputy deployed a spike strip as the suspects drove east on 159th Avenue toward Liberty Street.

The driver of the stolen Subaru allegedly drove into oncoming traffic, accelerated, and hit the deputy with the vehicle. The deputy was catapulted into the air and thrown a considerable distance.

The suspect fled the area following the collision. The deputy suffered serious injuries. The stolen vehicles were involved in vehicle collisions. The suspects ran from the scene.

21-year-old Miguel Cardenas was identified as the driver of the stolen Honda and taken into custody. 34-year-old Joel Gonzalez was identified as the driver of the stolen Subaru. Gonzalez was arrested the following day on unrelated charges.

ACSO says evidence recovered from the scene identified Gonzalez as the driver of the Subaru and the suspect who hit the deputy. Gonzalez is charged with Attempted Murder of a Police Officer, Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, two counts of Unlawful Driving or Taking a Vehicle, and two counts of Possession of Stolen Property.
