The Catawba County Sheriff’s Office has announced an arrest in connection to a fatal shooting in Newton, North Carolina. CCSO reports that deputies responded to a report of a person shot at a home in the 5000 block of Hope Road just after 5:00 p.m. on June 27, 2024.

At the scene, CCSO deputies found 31-year-old Larry Ray Whisnant suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Whisnant succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Vale resident, 30-year-old Trevor Kiernan O’Mara, has been arrested and charged with murder. At this time, it is believed that there was an altercation between Whisnant and O’Mara that led to the shooting.
