The Charleston Police Department has arrested a 25-year-old man for an alleged attempted sexual assault at a local Planet Fitness. CPD reports that a suspect followed a gym member into a private area of the gym on Sam Rittenberg Boulevard and attempted to assault them on July 24, 2024.

The victim managed to escape safely. Following an investigation, CPD says it had arrested 25-year-old Richard Isaiah Whitney of Charleston. Whitney was taken into custody on July 27 and charged with Assault with Intent to Commit Criminal Sexual Conduct.

Whitney has since been released on bond.
