The Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting that left one man dead. Another man is in custody in connection to the fatal shooting. SCSO reports that deputies responded to the 14600 block of Spotswood Furnace Road for a reported shooting around 1 a.m. on September 1, 2024.
SCSO says it was reported that a large group had gathered and was trespassing on property owned by the county. A fight broke out. 19-year-old Christian Whalen reportedly attempted to break up the fight when he was shot in the lower extremity.
The victim was transported to an area hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Detectives say they determined that 18-year-old Kenneth Watson has fired the weapon hitting Christian.
Watson has been charged with Homicide and The Use of a Firearm With the Commission of a Felony. He is currently being held in the Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.
