13-year-old male killed during officer-involved shooting – Utica Police Department

Update – The Utica Police Department has identified the 13-year-old deceased in the shooting as Nyah Mway. The three officers involved have been identified as Patrick Husnay, Bryce Patterson, and Andrew Citriniti.

UPD says the officers were patrolling the area near Shaw Street to assist CID with at least two recent robbery investigations in which the suspects were described as Asian males who had black firearms and forcibly demanded and stole property from victims.

In one incident, the suspects were described as an Asian male and a dark skinned male. One was on a bicycle and the other was on foot. UPD says officers approached Nyah Mway and another juvenile based on these identifying factors.

UPD says Mway was also walking in the roadway in violation of New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law 1156a. The officers attempted to stop the two 13-year-old juveniles. UPD claims body-worn camera footage shows Mway fleeing when officers went to pat frisk him. He allegedly produced a replica GLOCK pellet gun from the front of his body.

UPD claims Mway points the weapon directly at Officer Patterson and the other officer. UPD has released the videos here.

Original – The Utica Police Department was involved in an officer-involved shooting on Friday night. UPD reports that officers carried out a traffic stop in the 900 block of Shaw Street as part of a police investigation around 10:18 p.m. on June 28, 2024.

UPD says one of the juveniles fled from officers. The juvenile allegedly displayed what appeared to be a handgun. A UPD officer discharged his firearm hitting the juvenile. A 13-year-old male was transported to Wynn Hospital where he passed away.

The Utica Police Department will be holding a press conference on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at the Utica City Hall. Further details are pending.
