Will County Sheriff’s Office arrests parents in death of 2-year-old girl

The Will County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrests of the parents of a 2-year-old girl, Trinity Balen-Weiher. WCSO says its deputies responded to the 12200 block of West Thorn Apple Drive in the Village of Homer Glen for an unresponsive two-year-old around 11:37 p.m. on November 6, 2024.

Authorities say deputies were told that there might be a carbon monoxide leak inside the residence. Deputies reportedly found the homeowner and father, 49-year-old Edward Weiher, giving chest compressions to Trinity in the living room on an ottoman.

Police also say the girl’s mother, 27-year-old Alexa Balen, and her six-year-old child were inside the house. According to authorities, Trinity was transported to Silver Cross Hospital where she passed away.

Authorities say it was determined that there was no gas leak inside the residence. WCSO says deputies found garbage, rotten food, soiled diapers, medical waste, and evidence of drug use scattered throughout the residence.

Police claim heroin and Xanax were also found. WCSO says responding deputies found multiple doses of administered Narcan near the area where Trinity was located.

According to WCSO, the parents were transported to the Sheriff’s Office for questioning. The six-year-old was taken into protective custody. Police allege the parents made incriminating statements to detectives.

Edward Weiher and Alexa Balen have been charged with felony Endangering The Life or Health of a Child, two counts of Unlawful Possession of a Control Substance, and a misdemeanor count of Endangering The Life or Health of a Child.

The autopsy report and toxicology report are pending.
