DeLand, Florida – The Volusia Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal dog attack that claimed the life of an eight-year-old boy in DeLand.
In a statement, authorities said the attack was reported just before 5 p.m. on Monday in the area of Arabesque Drive and Airport Road.
Witnesses reportedly called 911 and began CPR on the victim. The boy was unable to survive his injuries.
Authorities say responding deputies chased the loose dogs down the road. Volusia County Animal Services personnel eventually captured both animals.
One is described as a pit bull and the other is a mixed breed. The dogs are being held in quarantine by Animal Services. Sheriff Mike Chitwood is expected to provide a briefing on the tragedy on Tuesday.
