Vancouver Police announce arrest of two Central Saanich Police officers for sexual assault

Vancouver, Canada – The Vancouver Police Department has announced the arrests of two officers from the Central Saanich Police Service. According to VPD, a criminal investigation was initiated on October 28 after a person came forward with information about two officers who had allegedly had unlawful sexual contact with an adult woman they met while on duty.

The BC Prosecution Service has charged 43-year-old Matthew Ball with one count of Sexual Assault and one count of Breach of Trust for alleged offenses that occurred between February 1, 2019 and October 31, 2023.

The BC Prosecution Service has charged 40-year-old Ryan Johnston with one count of Sexual Assault for alleged offenses that occurred between February 6, 2020 and March 8, 2020.

The suspects were taken into custody on Tuesday morning, according to VPD. No other details are available at this time.

Update – CBC News reports that Central Saanich Police Services officer, 43-year-old Matthew Ball, has died by suicide after being charged with sexual assault.

VPD Deputy Chief Fiona Wilson said in a news conference that Ball and Ryan Johnston allegedly had inappropriate contact with a woman they met while on duty.

Wilson said the two officers had separate relationships with the woman who was in his mid-20s. Ball had served with the Calgary Police Service for around 12 years before joining the CSPS in 2016.
