On November 14, 2023, an officer with the Birmingham Police Department responded to the scene of a car break-in call and gunfire erupted. Around 8:50 PM, the Birmingham 911 Communications Division received a call about a car break-in in progress at a home in the 2500 block of 29th Street Ensley. A West Precinct officer was dispatched to the location. Upon arrival, the officer reportedly heard an exchange of gunfire nearby.
Police say the officer observed two male suspects fleeing the scene on foot. The officer pursued the suspects into an alleyway until he lost sight of them. The Birmingham Police Department canvassed the area but was not able to locate the suspects. Authorities say the preliminary investigation reveals at least two suspects were breaking into a vehicle at the residence when they were involved in a shootout with the homeowner.
The homeowner was not hit by gunfire. The officer was not hit and did not fire any shots. The homeowner’s vehicle had been broken into.
