Sumter County, South Carolina – The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office has announced the arrest of 22-year-old Jaden Shamont Smith of Sumter.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, a 15-year-old juvenile was wounded during a drive-by shooting on New Year’s Day. Deputies stopped a fleeing vehicle that witnesses said may have been involved.
Around 3:12 p.m. on January 1, Sumter County Dispatch received a 911 call reporting a shooting on East Red Bay Road.
At the scene, deputies learned that a juvenile inside the home had suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. The victim was taken to Prisma Tuomey Hospital.
Witnesses reportedly told authorities that several black males in black on an adjacent street had shot in the direction of the home. Witnesses also described the suspect’s blue sedan.
The vehicle in question was allegedly stolen. It was stopped at McCrays Mill Road near Stadium Road. A short pursuit ended when the suspects fled on foot. Three were apprehended. A fourth suspect is still being sought.
SCSO says two of the suspects were juveniles. The third was identified as Jaden Shamont Smith who was allegedly in possession of a handgun, ammunition, and marijuana. Police also say they found additional handguns and ammunition in the suspect vehicle.
Smith is charged with Possession of a Stolen Pistol.
