A Spoke Valley deputy tried to pull over a potentially impaired driver in a U-Haul pickup on November 18, 2023, after 10 p.m. The U-Haul, traveling westbound on Sprague Avenue, refused to pull over. Deputy Lederle clocked the U-Haul traveling around 75 miles per hour while weaving between lanes.
The driver continued to drive recklessly while turning onto Argonne Road, Broadway Avenue, and eventually University Road. At some point, Spokane Regional Air Support Unit’s Air-2 joined the pursuit.
The vehicle pursuit ended at the end of Mansfield Road, where the driver exited the U-Haul and tried to hide behind a parked vehicle. The foot pursuit was temporary because the driver jumped back in the U-Haul and fled north on Sargent Road. The driver continued to drive recklessly. Spike strips were successfully deployed on Fancher Road. The vehicle pursuit ended when the driver emerged from the U-Haul and fled on foot Deputies eventually apprehended the driver.
The driver of the U-Haul has been identified as Devontaye I. Lyghts. On November 20, 2023, Lyghts was released on his own recognizance at the order of Spokane County Superior Court Commissioner E. Cruz.
