The Santa Cruz Police Department has announced the arrest of a suspect in an alleged hate crime incident at the recently opened The Neighbors Pub.
According to SCPD, 45-year-old James Eason was identified as the suspect in the Hate Crime incident at The Neighbors Pub at 711 Pacific Avenue. Police say Eason is in custody for an unrelated crime.
He will be rebooked on charges of Vandalism, Hate Crime, and Arson in connection to the incident on December 10. SCPD says its officers responded to a report of vandalism and possible arson at the establishment around 3 a.m. on December 10.
Police say someone had etched an offensive message into the glass front doors at the bar. Authorities also allege that evidence was found suggesting an attempt to set fire to the area around the front entrance.
Burnt materials were collected and a section of the wall near the doorway was scorched, according to SCPD. Police say officers used body camera footage from an earlier, unrelated arrest to identify the suspect.
