The Redding Police Department said officers and emergency personnel were dispatched to the 1000 block of Hartnell Avenue for a two-vehicle collision with injuries on November 25 around 3:15 PM. At the scene, they found the driver of a 1999 Chevrolet Silverado pickup trapped inside the vehicle and unresponsive. Once the driver was extracted from the vehicle, aid was rendered. The driver was transported to the Mercy Medical Center where he was later pronounced deceased.
31-year-old Daveiontay Norwood, of Redding, was determined to be the driver of the other vehicle, a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado pickup. Authorities claim Norwood displayed signs of being under the influence of alcohol and narcotics. Norwood was arrested and transported to the Shasta County Jail where he was booked for driving under the influence of alcohol causing bodily injury, driving with a blood alcohol level greater than .08% causing bodily injury, driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs causing bodily injury, possession of controlled substance, driving while license is suspended for DUI, and probation violation.
Police say the preliminary investigation has determined that Norwood was driving eastbound on Hartnell Avenue just east of Churn Creek at an estimated high rate of speed when he collided with the 1999 Silverado that was pulling out of a public driveway. Both drivers were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
A passenger in Norwood’s vehicle fled on foot following the collision.
