A person has been fatally shot near Oakland City Hall in an officer-involved shooting after gunshot reports on ShotSpotter. The Oakland Police Department confirmed that officers responded to the 300 block of Frank Ogawa Plaza on Tuesday morning before 4 AM after a shotSpotter alert. ShotSpotter has recently been rebranded to SoundThinking Inc. The California-based company provides departments with a controversial gunfire locator service.
When officers reached the scene, they found a victim with gunshot wounds who was later pronounced deceased at the scene. The incident has been shrouded in mystery after Oakland Police officials held a press conference and walked away as reporters started questioning the incident. It is not known how police interacted with the victim or why the third-party system was used instead of “shots fired” over the police radio.
An officer who was involved in the shooting was “not physically injured” but has been placed on administrative leave, according to East Bay Times. The Oakland Police Officers’ Association said a veteran officer was “confronted by an armed individual who opened fire” as he started his shift near City Hall. The association claims the officer pulled his weapon and fired in response to the gunfire. Previously, there was pushback against police departments using the ShotSpotter system to detect gunshots amid claims police had used it to fabricate evidence.
