Update – The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office announced on social media that it had arrested two for attempted murder in this stabbing incident. Detectives say they identified the suspects as 25-year-old Devin Wolfgang Vandorhoef and 25-year-old Darius Avery Whyte.
Three victims were taken to an area hospital with minor to critical injuries. The victims are expected to survive. MCSO detectives say Vandorhoef and a female victim had previously met and had gotten to know each other through a gaming platform.
Vandorhoef allegedly developed a year’s long obsession with the victim before flying from his residence in Canada to California. He was accompanied by Whyte who is also from Canada.
Authorities say Vandorhoef arrived at the Bollenbacher Drive residence. He knocked on the door while holding a package and identified himself as a delivery driver. The victim’s boyfriend reportedly opened the door before Vandorhoef forced his way in and began stabbing the boyfriend.
The female grabbed a sharp metal object and began defending her boyfriend. Detectives say the female victim was strangled and stabbed by the suspect. The suspect also suffered multiple critical stab wounds.
Detectives say the package Vandorhoef was carrying contained handcuffs, duct tape, and knives. It is not known how the items were intended to be used. Whyte was arrested on November 26 while on a flight to return to Canada.
Vandorhoef is currently being held on a $4,150,000 bail and Whyte is being held on a $1,000,000 bail.
