The Houston Police Department has provided an update on the officer-involved shooting with an aggravated robbery suspect. The officer discharged his weapon two times and did not strike the suspect. Assistant Chief Yasar Bashir said that no one was injured. The suspect is in custody.
At approximately 9:15 PM, the complainant was sleeping in his vehicle on Cityscape Avenue. Police say the suspect tapped on his window with a weapon in his hand. The complainant exited the vehicle leading to a fight between the complainant and the suspect over the suspect’s gun. At one point, both ended up on the ground and the gun discharged hitting no one.
Assistant Chief Bashir said in a statement that a witness saw the altercation and flagged down two Houston Police Department officers who were in the area. Upon arrival, officers began issuing verbal commands to separate the individuals. Bashir claimed that the suspect reached over and grabbed the weapon. The officers reportedly gave the suspect verbal commands to drop the weapon but the suspect refused.
The suspect began to walk southbound on Cityscape and continued to ignore the officers’ commands to drop the gun. The suspect ended up in the 13000 block of Cityscape in an apartment complex. Assistant Chief Yasar Bashir said that the suspect turned around and the officer felt threatened. At this point, the offer discharged the weapon two times but did not strike the suspect.
The suspect continued to the outer perimeter of the complex where he threw his weapon over the gate. Officers discharged their less lethal CED weapon twice but it had no impact. Finally, the officers went hands-on, took the suspect to the ground, and handcuffed the suspect. The suspect was transported to the hospital for treatment for injuries sustained in the initial altercation with the complainant.
Police say the suspect’s weapon was recovered at the scene. The officers will be placed on administrative duty and the body-worn camera footage will be released within 30 days.
