On November 7, 2023, at approximately 11:40 p.m., Houston Police responded to a collision involving a silver Mazda 43S driven by 23-year-old Fernando Jose Chacon Perez. According to the news release, the driver entered an entrance ramp to the Gulf Freeway from a service road. The vehicle reentered the service road before colliding with a utility pole and tree at 9100 Gulf Freeway.
Perez has two passengers, an 18-year-old in the front passenger seat and a rear-seat passenger. The 18-year-old and Perez survived the collision. Houston Fire Department paramedics pronounced the rear-seat passenger deceased at the scene.
Following an investigation, officers charged Chacon Perez with intoxication assault and intoxication manslaughter. The victim has not been identified.
