Hanover County, Virginia – The Hanover County Sheriff’s Office has announced the arrest of a school bus driver for allegedly driving under the influence. According to HCSO, deputies responded to Laurel Meadow Elementary School for a bus driver suffering a medical issue around 3:44 p.m. on December 20.
HCSO says deputies made contact with 68-year-old Danny Ray Spence who displayed slurred speech and emitted an odor of an alcoholic beverage. Authorities say Spence completed a portion of his route before an aid noticed something was wrong and took over.
The aid returned the bus to Laurel Meadow Elementary School with the students still on board. Spence was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital out of an abundance of caution, according to HCSO.
The Sheriff’s Office says Spence was booked into the Pamunkey Regional on charges of Driving Under the Influence and Child Endangerment. The Sheriff’s Office is working with Hanover County Public Schools to identify the students that were on board and to notify their parents.
