The Gwinnett County Police Department reports that it is investigating an officer-involved shooting that resulted in an adult male suspect suffering a gunshot wound to the hand.
According to GCPD, officers were carrying out a crime suppression detail in the area of Dawson Boulevard and McDonough Drive in Norcross just before 9 p.m.
Police say officers observed a man walking through a parking lot. When officers attempted to speak to the man, he reportedly ran across McDonough Drive toward Dawson Boulevard.
GCDP says an officer ordered the man to stop but the man continued. During a foot pursuit, the male suspect fell and dropped a handgun.
The man allegedly got up and tried to pick up the gun. Police say the officer drew his firearm and gave the suspect multiple commands.
The male ignored the commands and picked up the gun causing the officer to fire multiple shots at him, according to GCPD. The man was struck at least once in the hand.
GCPD says the man continued running for a short distance but surrendered a short time later. The male suspect was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
GCPD’s Deadly Force Investigation Team has responded with Crime Scene Investigators. Police confirm charges are pending for the male suspect.
